WORD OF THE WEEK: INTEGRITY
Another definition of integrity means: “not to be divided.” What does that mean? Let me show you how that applies to Taekwondo. Is Manav a Black Belt? Well, we don’t know. He’s wearing a black belt. But wearing a Black Belt doesn’t make someone a Black Belt.
What makes a person a Black Belt is determined by how they act. Do they act like a Black Belt? How does a Black Belt act? They follow the Student Creed and the Black Belt Principles.
If Manav follows the Student Creed and the Black Belt Principles here at the dojang AND outside of the dojang, that means he’s not divided, and he has integrity.
But if Manav only follows the Student Creed and Black Belt Principles in the dojang and DOESN’T follow them outside, then that means he’s divided and does not have integrity.
This is why we say, “Once a Taekwondo student, always a Taekwondo student.” When you leave the dojang, even though you take off your belt and uniform, you are still a Taekwondo student and should behave like a Taekwondo student. That’s what it means to BE a Black Belt!
Exercising Integrity helps you. It helps you live the Black Belt lifestyle – not just learn it.
