For about 5,000 years, yoga has been a part of the world. While most of us are familiar with the idea of yoga, many of us do not quite understand what it is, how it works, or why it is good for the body. Although the practice of yoga is typically associated with Eastern religion, yoga is truly nothing more than what it is at its core – stretching exercises that have a positive impact on the mind and body; and these exercises can benefit anyone, regardless of religious background or beliefs. While yoga has many benefits, three of the most relevant are the benefits it provides for your breathing, your heart, and your mind.

We all know that breathing is one of the most important aspects of life – after all, without breath, you cannot live. But many of us fail to realize that we can improve our breathing. Yoga improves lung capacity by focusing on deep, mindful breathing. For those who play sports, this can be extremely beneficial, as performance and endurance are improved. But even if you do not play sports, improved breathing will prove to be helpful in your everyday life.

A healthy heart goes a long way in helping to create a healthy body. There have been plenty of studies conducted to find the correlations between yoga and good health, but among these studies, the correlation between yoga and a healthy heart has been focused on the most. Yoga can lower blood pressure, and it can also slow your heart rate. Furthermore, a link between decreased cholesterol and an improved immune system has been proven. In fact, yoga can be beneficial for the heart to such an extreme extent that is has even been proven to help reverse heart disease!

Yoga also has an immensely positive impact on the mind. Those who practice yoga find that their stress levels are reduced, and their concentration is improved; also, yoga has been proven to reduce the risk of depression. As yoga brings extra oxygen to the brain and lowers hormone neurotransmitter levels, a sense of calm and wellness is created.

Yoga can be practiced in as little as 15 to 20 minutes each day. With regular yoga practice, the body’s respiration, circulation, and mental wellbeing can all be improved. Consider adding yoga to your daily routine – you won’t be disappointed with the results!
