Have you wondered if your child might benefit from ADHD medications, but have been afraid to give it a try? The following are common questions and answers about ADHD medications and children.

What is ADHD? ADHD stands for Attention Deficit Hyperactivity Disorder, which is a common condition that can be shaped with changes in environment and with use of medications. It affects children socially and academically.

What are common symptoms of ADHD? There are two main ADHD camps: inattentive ADHD (which is sometimes called ADD) and hyperactive ADHD, although many kids display characteristics from both of these categories. Children with inattentive ADHD have trouble focusing or remaining on task. Hyperactive ADHD kids cannot seem to control their bodies or mouths, meaning they have so much energy and so much to say that they end up acting and speaking inappropriately. Some children display both sets of characteristics.

Do you think your child displays enough of these symptoms to be concerned? To get a diagnosis, see either your doctor, a psychiatrist, or the school counselor for an evaluation. As long as your child is mostly healthy, you can probably try ADHD drugs on a trial basis just to find out if they help your child or not. In most cases, children respond positively to ADHD meds immediately, so you’ll know right away (within the first day) if the meds are good for your child or not.

How do ADHD medications work? In most cases, doctors prescribe stimulants for ADHD patients. You’d thnk a stimulant would send an ADHD child through the roof, but instead, these particular drugs help ADHD kids slow down and pay attention. These meds work because they increase blood flow to the brain and increase the production of two neurotransmitters: dopamine and epinephrine. ADHD drugs also make your body hold onto that extra dopamine and epinephine a little longer by inhibiting the uptakers in your brain.

What should you expect to see from your child if the ADHD medications really are right for him or her? If the ADHD medications are working properly, your child will feel good, be able to stick to a task and complete it, and be more relaxed. While it may take a while to get the dosage and type of medication right, you should see improvements right away if the medicine is right for your child.

If you suspect your child has ADHD, don’t hesitate to give the medications a try. It won’t take long to figure out if the medication is right for your child or not.
